Examining the Role of Proper Hydration in Weight Loss

August 26, 2014 by Lance Richmond Leave a Comment

Are you feeling sluggish? Do you sometimes get lightheaded? Does your skin look dry and dull? If you recognize these symptoms, you could be suffering from dehydration. Dehydration takes a serious toll on your body and can lead to life-threatening medical emergencies. Failing to stay hydrated can also compromise your weight loss efforts. If you’re trying to slim down, here are a few reasons why you should make sure you’re getting the fluids you need.

Appetite Control
If your stomach is rumbling, it may actually be water you need, rather than food. Oftentimes, the symptoms of dehydration are mistaken for hunger, causing you to reach for calories your body doesn’t need. Getting enough fluids can also help you keep your appetite in check when you’re trying to lose weight. If you have a craving, sometimes drinking a glass of water is enough to diminish that nagging feeling so you don’t fall off your weight loss plan. Just be sure to grab the right beverage. Water has zero calories and is the best option for hydration. Avoid calorie-laden beverages, as these will sabotage your weight loss efforts.

Metabolism Boost
Your body relies on water to perform nearly every bodily function. Without the right fluid levels, nothing in your body can work at its optimal level, including your metabolism. When your metabolism slows down, your body stops using fat effectively. In fact, without proper hydration, your body may burn far fewer calories per day than it would otherwise.

Water Retention
While it may sound counterintuitive, you need to drink water to flush water from your system. When you don’t get enough fluids, your body holds onto the water it does have for emergency reserves. That translates into fluid retention and water-weight gain. Flush the water and toxins from your system by staying hydrated.
